"What Ever Happened to the Lone Ranger?"
In the world of yesteryears where heroes and superheroes existed, they ruled the mind of the child in each of us. We all at one time wanted to be someone like Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman or a Lone Ranger or the Great Detective. Even today we push the world of "ONE". Just like the late 60's-70's group "Three Dog Night" sang about "One is the Loneliest Number You will ever Know."
"THE MYTH"
In the latter part of the 20th century, "Team Building" became recognized by many companies as an important factor in providing a quality service and remaining competitive. Yet as we stride into the 21st century, the term "team building" can still sometimes seem rather nebulous - people often know that they need it, but aren't quite sure what it is so they try to turn to the "LONE RANGER." People like Lee Iacocca who tries to build success around them, who, ultimately falter and leave the team beaten up, frustrated and bewildered.
RECOGNIZING THE NEED FOR CHANGE
Leaders need to recognize great changes are taking place in many organizations around the world. Global competition, the opening up of local markets, and increased communication and learning between organizations in different parts of the country mean that large slow moving organizations may not be able to compete in the in the upcoming decade. Small fast moving organizations that fail to effectively plan will falter and collapse. We need a team that has niche talents that can move quickly and decisively. A team with a DRIVEN PURPOSE.
Traditional career paths in organizations have been shortened and employees need to learn faster, be able to take on new information and technologies, and be flexible in the face of opportunities and threats.
THE CYBERNETIC UNIT
The old ways, where one person was the repository of all wisdom in an organization is coming to an end. No person is an island, the myth of the "Lone Ranger" is dead. The most productive companies are moving to a flexible team structure where more information can be processed and better decisions made. The "team" is now the basic "cybernetic unit" of the flexible organization and is replacing the "cult of the individual".
STAGES DEFINED
The Journey Leader defines a team as a group of people working towards a common goal. 'Team Building' is the process of enabling that group of people to reach their goal. It is a management issue, and the most effective form of team building is that which is undertaken as a form of management consultancy, rather than as pure training (though there is a definite role for training within a program of team building).
Journey Leader stages of team building are:
- To clarify the team goals
- To identify those issues which inhibit the team from reaching their goals
- To address those issues, remove the inhibitors and enable the goals to be achieved
- Recognizing the right issues, and tackling them in an appropriate way and an appropriate order
- Weed out the "Lone Rangers" who will not function within a team
- Assess the Talent to make sure that everyone has a goal, each goal has a purpose, and each purpose has reason, and each reason has a metric, and each metric has a change, and every change has someone, and each someone has a team, each team is empowered to make everyone successful.
THE NEW EMERGING SUPERHERO "THE WINNING TEAM"
There is a great difference between winning teams and losing teams. As on the sporting ground often a "group" of talented champions can be defeated by a "team" of more modest players. Teamwork is a skill that must be nurtured, monitored and readied for change. It is a mixture of good leadership and motivational skills, ability to absorb new information, to solve conflicts, and to understand each individual on the team.
